CUAD 41-category taxonomy mapped to the 12 checklist areas

The Contract Understanding Atticus Dataset (CUAD) labels 41 clause categories across 510 real commercial contracts. Use these category names as the canonical clause vocabulary when classifying what a clause is, then review it under the mapped checklist area. CUAD is built from US (SEC-filed) contracts; the US-only caveat applies.

Coverage notes

  • CUAD has no categories for indemnification scope, confidentiality obligations themselves, force majeure, or data protection — the checklist covers those areas independently of CUAD.
  • CUAD's restrictive-covenant categories (Non-Compete, Exclusivity, No-Solicit, Non-Disparagement) have no dedicated checklist area; they are grouped under area 6 because in commercial review they most often travel with the confidentiality cluster. Their enforceability is highly jurisdiction-dependent — always qualify.
